Undergraduate LSU students taking Chem 3493 (Physical Chemistry Laboratory) and Chem 7750 (Introduction to Surface Science) have had unique opportunities to learn about nanoscience with the described AFM instruments. Every semester, Garno shuts down research projects for a week of AFM laboratories with groups of chemistry undergraduates. Multiple instruments are used so that smaller teams of students will each have hands-on experience using state-of-the-art instruments during classroom labs and internships. Activities include installing probes and samples, tuning acquisition and measurement parameters, as well as acquisition and analysis of digital images using software tools.
