CONFERENCE DETAILS:

On behalf of the Eric Voegelin Institute, I’m very pleased to announce a student conference at Louisiana State University on Friday, April 22 and Saturday, April 23: “Re-reading Aristotle’s Ethics Today.”

We begin Friday afternoon at 3:30 pm with a keynote lecture by Ronna Burger, Professor of Philosophy, Catherine & Henry J. Gaisman Chair and Director of Judeo-Christian Studies, and Sizeler Professor of Jewish Studies at Tulane University.  Dr. Burger received her PhD from the New School for Social Research in New York City, where she studied with Seth Benardete.  She is the author of  Aristotle’s Dialogue with Socrates: On the Nicomachean Ethics (Chicago, 2008) as well as several books on Plato’s dialogues, and she edited several volumes of essays by Benardete.

Dr. Burger’s lecture will be held in the Sternberg Salon of the French House on the LSU campus, home of the Ogden Honors College, and a reception will follow.  The lecture will be available live via Zoom as well.

On Saturday we will have three sessions, with discussions led by faculty panelists, focusing on different issues in the Ethics.  (These can also be attended on Zoom if you prefer.). Panels will begin at 10:00 am and will conclude at 3:00 pm. Panelists will include Robert Berman, Professor of Philosophy at Xavier University of New Orleans; Alexander Duff, University of North Texas;  Robert Koons, Professor of Philosophy, University of Texas; and  Usha Nathan, Assistant Professor of Philosophy at LSU.  Panels will be held at the French House, home of the LSU Ogden Honors College.   A box lunch will be served.

The conference is open to undergraduate and graduate students and faculty from any university in the region, as well as interested members of the public.  For additional information, feel free to contact me at poston@lsu.edu or call the number below.

Parking is available on the LSU campus in the lot behind the Visitor’s Center at the corner of Highland and Dalrymple; also, there should be room in the garage attached to the Barnes and Noble bookstore.  (On Saturday, you should be able to park on the streets if you prefer.)

We hope you can join us for what we anticipate will be a lively and enlightening couple days.
