June 12th, 2025: Sam Murillo Presented Research on WC-CoCr Coatings at CISIA Conference
Samantha Murillo, the undergraduate leading the atmospheric plasma spray research during Summer 2025, presented findings on the deposition of durable, wear resistant WC-CoCr coatings. She explained phase transformations and compositions of coatings determined through XRD, SEM, and TEM, as well as the development of a new Epoxy curing rig to enable the measurement of adhesion strength.

April 25th, 2025: Emma and Lina Presented Research on Complex Concentrated Alloys for Additive Friction Stir Deposition at LSU Discover Day
Emma and Lina presented their evaluation of the viability of NiCoCr and NiCoCu alloys for additive friction stir deposition by comparing predicted phase transformations with experimentally observed microstructures. Their analysis combined X-ray diffraction (XRD) to monitor phase evolution with backscattered electron (BSE) imaging and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) to assess compositional distribution and phase morphology.

Feb 25th, 2025: Middle School Mentee Awarded Second Place in Louisiana Region VII Science & Engineering Fair 2025
Middle schooler Brantley Hulsey spent November 2024 through February 2025 working on a ceramic slip casting project under the guidance of Dr. Marvel and Emma McCarthy. He was awarded second place in the science fair and a nomination to go to the national level. We couldn't be more proud of this accomplishment!

November 21st, 2024: Vipul Jain Awarded First Place for Poster Presentation at LSU International Research Fair
Postdoctoral researcher Vipul Jain presented a poster on Reactive Nitride Based Composite Coatings via Atmospheric Plasma Spray for prevention from hydrogen permeation and studied using SEM, EDS and TEM. Austin Knight and Landon Dorman worked with Vipul on the APS system, and Vipul made first place in presenting their work and results.

October 2024: New Project - NSF FuSe2
Our new project led by Prof. Anthony Engler (LSU ChemE) with Prof. Phil Sprunger (LSU Physics) and Prof. Revati Kumar (LSU Chemistry) has begun.

August 2024: Rashed Mia Joined Team as PhD Student
Rashed Mia completed his BS in Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at the University of Dhaka (DU) and an MS in Materials Chemistry from the University of South Dakota (USD), where his thesis focused on binary-phase NiO-TiO2 heterojunction nanocrystals for photocatalytic H2O2 formation.

July 2024: Vipul Jain Joined Team as Postdoctoral Researcher
Vipul Jain made team history in becoming our first postdoctoral researcher! He joined the team following the completion of his PhD in Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science at Indian Institute of Technology, Indore.
