Science Research Mentorship Program at Kenilworth Science and Technology Academy
The Science Research Mentorship (SRM) program launched in 2012 and connects Kenilworth middle school students with university faculty members and graduate students to conduct experiments that lead to science fair projects. This program has been transformative for students, many of whom have gone on to win awards and receive recognition in various competitions. The Marvel Lab works with students on understanding slip casting processes to design and fabricate durable ceramic crucibles.

Louisiana Board of Regents STEM Speakers Bureau: Speaking of Science
The Speaking of Science (SoS) program provides students in every type of school—urban and rural, poor and rich, public and private—exposure to the best researchers in Louisiana. The purpose is to increase public awareness of exciting research and development in Louisiana, spark the interest of students in STEM professions and showcase the excellence of Louisiana’s leading faculty and professionals. Speakers are available free of charge to speak to students, educators, and parents throughout Louisiana on a variety of topics in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Dr. Marvel's current presentation is called Exposing the Natural Beauty of Materials: Insights into Materials Characterization where he summarizes the field of microstructure characterization and shows how the atomic structures of materials are much more organized than most realize!

High School Summer Research Program
As part of its strategic plan, mission, and vision, the LSU College of Engineering is dedicated to developing students into the next generation of transformative problem solvers for the local region, the state, and beyond. The High School Summer Research (HSSR) Program is an outreach initiative aimed at engaging high-achieving high school students in real research in the fields of engineering, computer science, and construction management. HSSR interns have opportunities to learn from faculty research groups and understand how they work, what inspires them, and how to continue in fields related to engineering in college and beyond. In addition to their work on a research team/project, HSSR interns also attend workshops that include trainings on safety, research best practices, ethics in research, and communication. The program culminates in a poster presentation for students to present their research projects, which is mandatory for the completion of the internship.

LSU ENGage
What does an engineer do? Come get your passport to engineering careers by going around the lab in 180 minutes. Students will tour research labs at LSU in the renovated engineering building (Patrick F. Taylor Hall) and participate in hands-on demonstrations led by professors and undergraduate students. This event is FREE and open to 6th-8th grade classes on a first come, first serve basis. One teacher/chaperone for every 10 students is required; maximum of 40 students per school. Learn about bioengineering, biomedical engineering, nanomaterials, electrochemistry, clean energy, waste water treatment, and many other engineering topics. Dr. Marvel's group provides hands-on demonstrations to learn about ceramic processing and why ceramics are the materials of the future.
