Our research involves the synthesis of new organic materials that absorb and emit energy in the visible and near-infrared region of the optical spectrum (400–900 nm) and their development as biological labels, imaging agents, ion sensors, or as sensitizers for the photodynamic therapy (PDT) or the boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) of cancers. In our group, we design, synthesize, and characterize the properties of the new materials, based on porphyrin, phthalocyanine and boron dipyrromethene cores. We evaluate the structural features of the materials, their stability, photophysical, chemical and cellular properties. These studies lead to structure/activity relationships and investigations of the physicochemical parameters that optimize biological effectiveness.
