Geofluids Modeling Group (GMG)
Welcome to the Geofluids Modeling Group (GMG) at Louisiana State University (LSU)!
We study the complexities of subsurface systems through a multidisciplinary lens.
Our research focuses on Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical-Chemical (THMC) processes which involve
interactions of heat transfer, fluid flow, mechanical stress, and chemical reactions
in natural and engineered environments. Using cutting-edge numerical simulation tools
and experimental methods, we aim to better understand how heat and fluids move through
the subsurface and how they interact with rocks, minerals, and other fluids. Our ultimate
goal is to enhance resource recovery while minimizing environmental impacts by developing
accurate predictive models of subsurface behavior at the intersection of energy and
the environment.
Our current research areas include:
Carbon Storage and Sequestration
Underground Hydrogen Storage
Produced Water Resource Extraction (think Lithium!)
Geothermal Energy Extraction
Gas Hydrate Production and Recovery
PI of the Geofluids Modeling Group
Dr. Ipsita Gupta is an Associate Professor of Petroleum Engineering at LSU and directs
the Geofluids Modeling Group. She leads research in subsurface engineering, reservoir
management, and sustainable energy solutions. With over eight years of industry experience
at Chevron, ESRI India, and ONGC, Dr. Gupta brings a unique blend of academic expertise
and real-world application to her work. Her research advances the fields of underground
hydrogen storage (UHS), carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS), and critical
mineral recovery. Dr. Gupta is deeply committed to teaching and mentoring, equipping
the next generation of engineers with the skills and knowledge needed to address global
energy challenges.
