FAQs
Q: Who runs the lab?
A: Our lab is a shared space used by seven principal investigators (PIs), each leading their own research projects. The lab is coordinated by both the lab manager and the research manager, who work together to oversee daily operations, safety, equipment maintenance, purchasing, and inventory. They serve as the main points of contact for logistical and administrative support.
Q: What are the lab hours?
A: Lab hours vary depending on ongoing research activities and project schedules. While the lab is typically active between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., staffing is not guaranteed at all times. Visitors should coordinate in advance to ensure a lab member is available to assist them.
Q: How is the lab different from other research labs?
A: Unlike most university labs, which are run by a single PI, ours is a collaborative space shared by multiple PIs. This means we have a wide range of research happening simultaneously and everyone is expected to be mindful of equipment use, space-sharing, and lab etiquette.
Q: How do I schedule equipment or lab space?
A: Most shared equipment uses a digital calendar or sign-up sheet. You'll get access during onboarding or by request. Always book time in advance and cancel if you’re no longer using your slot.
Q: What safety trainings do I need?
A: All lab members are required to complete online and in-person safety training before participating in any lab work. These include: LSU Environmental Health & Safety Courses, The CITI Program, and in-person pipette training. Registration instructions are available upon request from the lab manager.
Q: Who is responsible for lab cleanliness and waste disposal?
A: Everyone. We all share responsibility for keeping the lab clean and organized. Dispose of waste in the proper containers and alert the lab manager if hazardous waste needs pickup.
Q: How do I learn more about your current studies and how to become a participant?
A: To learn more about our ongoing research studies or how to become involved as a participant, please contact our research manager, Heather Quiriarte.
Q: Can I get a tour of the lab?
A: Tours of the exercise physiology lab space are available by appointment only between the hours of 9am-3pm. The doors to access this area remain locked at all times. Only authorized personnel are able to enter the labs without an escort by swiping their Tiger ID. To request a tour, please contact the lab manager. You will need to reach out at least one week before the day you’d like to visit expressing your interest and if you are affiliated with another lab/organization.
Q: Who should I contact if I have a question or concern?
A: Lab members, should reference the lab handbook first. For general lab operations, safety, and ordering questions, please contact the lab manager. For project-specific issues or questions related to current research studies, please contact the research manager or your advisor. If you’re unsure of who to ask, the lab manager can point you in the right direction.
