Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

The LSU Music Education department is committed to preparing future music educators to be aware of current diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies and practices and to be prepared to implement those appropriately in their classrooms. As part of this commitment, DEI has been incorporated into music education coursework at LSU in substantive ways. All music education students are required to take a course titled “Teaching Music in Diverse Settings,” which includes units on special education and multicultural education, with an introduction to culturally responsive pedagogies. In addition, in the elementary and secondary methods courses, students engage with DEI issues pertaining to literature choice, classroom management, recruitment and retention, and barriers to music program access. Practicum experiences with students with special needs; in urban, suburban, and rural school settings; and in schools with populations of varied socioeconomic backgrounds prepare LSU music education students to succeed in a plethora of music teaching environments upon graduating.
